What's Up with That?

What’s up with that?
(Inspired by Def Poetry)

I see the pictures.
They’re plastered everywhere:
News, Internet, even Facebook’s got them.
Pictures of soldiers in full battle rattle
With helmets, vests and guns:
Patrolling through a crowded market around midday.
I can’t help but notice that the Iraqi’s have no body armor;
They have no helmets – no CLS trained battle buddy.
And I wonder – What’s up with that?

Soldiers need armor, no doubt,
But why don’t Iraqi’s have any?
More Iraqi’s died than soldiers did
More iraqi’s were wounded than solders were…
And I wonder:
What's up with that?

Are Americans worth more than Iraqis?
Are Iraqis disposable?
What makes our sons worth protecting
And their’s not?
What protects a little girl
when a bomb goes off?
Soldier's have kevlar and IBA
Civilians have what, a shirt, a dress...
What's up with that?

Perhaps the next time you look at a picture
Of soldiers patrolling –
Please think about all those living in the war zone
Living with no special armor:
And ask yourself
What’s up with that?
