IMPORTANT UPDATE: Convention 2012 postponed until fall
On May 11th, we sent out an email blast announcing the dates and location of the IVAW Convention originally scheduled for July 5th - 8th in Austin, TX. However, based on member feedback regarding concerns about camping in the summer heat as well as financial, logistical, and strategic considerations we've decided to postpone convention until the fall.
We understand this may cause undue strain on members that have already requested time off or reserved flights. If you have already booked travel please contact Jose Vasquez and Aaron Hughes right away so they can assist you with any costs associated with cancelling or changing your itinerary.
The Board, Convention Committee, and Staff believe this is the right choice for the future of our movement. Postponing the convention will open up new political opportunities, give us time to raise funds, and prepare a better overall convention. We are now looking into the following time frames for convention:
- October 5th - 8th: Columbus Day weekend which overlaps with the October 7th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan creating the opportunity for a unified action such as a Winter Soldier.
- November 9th - 12th: Veterans Day weekend which gives us the opportunity to reflect on a year of movement building, prepare for the new political climate after the election, and focus on healing our community.
We are aware that there are also many other factors to take into account with both of these dates. We plan to make a final decision within the next two weeks. If you have feedback, suggestions, or want to help with planning please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
We apologize for any confusion this may have caused but are excited for the opportunities this has opened up for the organization.
