Winter Soldier LiveBlog: Veterans Issues; Eli Wright

Eli Wright is awaiting a medical discharge from the US Army due to injuries sustained in Iraq. His story is not one of glory and purple hearts, and he suspects that is a reason why it is taking so long for the military to grant him his discharge. In a vehicle accident, Eli was ejected from a humvee and sustained back and neck injuries that he underestimated due to his adrenaline pumping. He found himself working at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, but unable to receive any treatment for his injuries at that hospital.

Due to his work at Walter Reed, Eli became more and more aware of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). He realized that he had many of the symptoms of TBI and was unable to effectively do his job. He addressed these concerns with the medical screening team in the military, and he received surgery and physical therapy. His shoulder is worse now than it was before the treatment, and he has been awaiting a medical discharge for six months. After he started speaking out about the problems veterans are facing medically, Eli Wright finally felt like he was being treated as a priority. It is sad, however, that that is what it took for him to get that service. He knows that his problems were minor compared to so many more, and that he is why he speaks out for those who cannot speak for themselves.
