Winter Soldier LiveBlog: Veterans Issues; Adrienne Kinne

Adrienne Kinne exited the military in 1998 and again in 2003. In 1998, she was given a full and complete end-of-service physical so that the military could compensate them for injuries sustained during service. In 2003, they were told that the EOSP was voluntary and, if one wanted one, they would have to wait an extra six to eight weeks at Fort Bragg, and the message was clear: do not ask for the EOSP.

After her service, Kinne went back to school and got a job with the VA in Richmond, Virginia as a research assistant on a PTSD study. There were many questions that needed to be answered, including the difference between PTSD and TBI. In internal communications, VA personnel said that they shouldn't screen for PTSD because the VA did not have the resources to treat as many cases as there would be. It was voluntary ignorance.

Kinne witnessed the VA prioritizing OIF/OEF veterans and, effectively, disenfranchising veterans who had been waiting far too long for their own care. Adrienne is someone who truly believes in the mission of the VA and her passion is heartening for all those who have had to deal with the bureaucracy.
