Winter Soldier LiveBlog: Military Sexism; Jeff Key

Jeff joined the military when he was 34 years old out of a love of country. Jeff is an out gay man but went ahead and joined the military under Clinton's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Jeff's squadmates knew who he was and who he dated, and yet they treated him like anyone else . . . and these were Marines. As a gay man, Jeff heard many of the statements made by military men about women a little differently than many straight men would have.

Jeff is now talking about how in our society the worst thing you can call a straight male teenager is a "fag." He's right, and I sit here feeling bad. I am very much accepting of LGBT, but I still get defensive and angry from time to time when someone calls me a fag, even if I'm no longer a teenager. That shouldn't be how it is, and the desire to prove heterosexuality is the root of so much hatred against gays. Standing ovation for Jeff.
