The Democrats won. Now what? A Draft?

What are the Democrats going to do now that they’ve won the House and Senate? Ask every 18 to 25 year old to serve their country, suggests the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), the main driving faction of the Democratic party led by Hillary Clinton. In the new issues of the DLC magazine, Blueprint, the lead article says “All Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 should be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic civil defense training and community service. This is not a draft -- nor is it military. Young people will be trained not as soldiers, but simply as citizens who understand their responsibilities in the event of natural disaster, epidemic, or terrorist attack.” In a completely unrelated note the same article later says, “We need to fortify the military's "thin green line" around the world by adding to the Special Forces and the Marines, and expanding the Army by 100,000 more troops.” And how exactly will they get 100,000 more troops when they can't even keep the number of troops they have now? Maybe 18-25 year olds serving their country will be inspired to serve their country while receiving “citizen” training from military? Democrats are supposed to stop the war, according to popular thinking, but it seems they want to prepare for bigger wars. An article in the same magazine called “A Winning Strategy” simply says, “America needs a bigger and better military.” The article explains, “The escalating conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched the all-volunteer force to the breaking point. Democrats should step forward with a plan to repair the damage, by adding more troops, replenishing depleted stocks of equipment, and reorganizing the force around the new missions of unconventional warfare, counterinsurgency, and civil reconstruction.” The Democrats, like the Republicans, seem more interested in expanding the so called “war on terror” and creating more veterans than immediate withdrawal and taking care of troops when they come home. |
