G.I. Coffeehouse Internship at Under the Hood Café National G.I. Coffeehouse Network Internship Program About Us: We are a national network of supporters of G.I. Coffeehouses created by veterans and civilian allies to provide a welcoming place for servicemembers off-base and to offer resources to vets and servicemembers on their rights and opportunities for finding support. The G.I. coffeehouses create a space for conversation and connection among servicemembers as well as civilians in their local community and work with U.S. antiwar movement groups. About the Internship: This is an internship through the national G.I. Coffeehouse Network with the Under the Hood Café, based in Kileen, TX. Interns will be provided with training and many other learning opportunities on how to do organizing with veterans and servicemembers. They will increase their experience in veteran-led and other peace and social justice movements. About the Coffeehouse: Under the Hood Café—Killeen, TX outside Ft. Hood “In the spirit of the Oleo Strut, Ft. Hood's Vietnam-era coffee house, Under the Hood is a place for soldiers to gather, relax and speak freely about the wars and the military. Support services for soldiers include counseling and information on GI rights, as well as referrals for legal advice.” http://www.underthehoodcafe.org Internship Responsibilities: Outreach, organizing, and local/regional/national networking for the coffeehouse. Maintaining a regular presence at the coffeehouse and/or staffing drop-in hours. Connecting with soldiers by visiting military bases. Planning events and promoting the coffeehouse on-base and among servicemembers, veterans, and civilian members of the local community. Working on fundraising projects. Completing other tasks related to the daily upkeep of the coffeehouse. *This internship is good for anyone interested in the how-tos of running a young nonprofit or community organization and in building strong connections and working relationships with veterans and servicemembers. **Housing is available. It is a shared housing situation (including bathroom facilities) with 1-3 male-bodied people. Qualifications: Ideally, candidates should have: Good communication skills to work easily with current and former sevicemembers, military family members, and current and potential civilian supporters and allies. Background or interest in organizing in a peace and social justice framework. Experience or interest in working in a military town and getting connected with G.I. and veteran-led organizing. Willingness to pick up skills in a fast-paced community space. Preferred qualifications: Experience with talking with soldiers in crisis, G.I. rights, outreach on active duty bases, and/or events planning.
